A Death Philosophy

Who was Sleeping Beauty? If we take a journey deep down the rabbit hole, we reach the occult teaching behind the story of Sleeping Beauty. This is the inside-out world where ‘the awakening’ is death and ‘sleep’ is living.

The story is well known, though the deeper esoteric version is rarely understood. At the birth of the princess, seven fairies are present. Six bring gifts to help her have a happy and fulfilled life. But the seventh curses the child into a long ‘sleep’.

The fairies represent the seven gods of the planetary ‘spheres’ (influences) that affect us in both life and death. The seventh, being Saturn (Satan), which relates to materialism, brings evil through the evil fairy. This relates to the need to live on earth (‘life’), or as the saying goes: “Birth is but a sleep and forgetting”.

So we need to understand that the party at the time of ‘birth’ in fact takes place in the spirit world, and it is only when the evil fairy puts the princess to sleep that she comes to ‘life’ in the material world.

Her ‘awakening’ from the sleep is in fact her death, the return back to her far more pleasant ‘spiritual’ world.

This is simply a different telling of the original mythological tale of Osiris who is able to reunite with his wife Isis when he leaves the material plane, after being killed by his brother Seth, when his body was chopped into fourteen parts, put in a coffin and thrown into the Nile. He is really only ‘alive’ in the spirit world.

To take the Sleeping Beauty tale a little further, the story shows, like the Osiris story, how we are never free from the influences of the planets and stars.

In the secret societies and the mystery schools long ago, initiates were prepared for their meeting with the guardians of the different spheres or influences we meet both on the way up (death) and on the way back down (life).

How we deal with these encounters dictates our direction in life and death. This is told in different ways in books such as the Egyptian and Tibetan Books of the Dead, and in modern books such as Robert Munroe’s Ultimate Journey.

They all amount to the same thing however, which is that if we have failed to overcome certain attachments, desires and fault lines we had developed in the material world, they affect our next incarnation, however and wherever that may be.

The ‘planets and stars’ make us go round and round in circles until we understand why we are trapped and then we can move above the circling, upwards into a spiral.

The great stone circles built long ago by the ancients (such as Stonehenge) are this acknowledgment by the ancients of the circles we move in, which one day we will move away from when our souls or consciousness have sufficiently developed. The stone circles are related to the planetary spheres, which we are bound by until we can break from the trap.

The mystic, Meister Eckhart, said in the thirteenth century that “if you fight your death, you’ll feel the demons tearing away at your life, but, if you have the right attitude to death, you will be able to see that the devils are really angels setting your spirit free”. This well-known saying is integral to occult teachings, where we must go through the trials on death caused by our life in physicality.

Death preparation requires that we work on ourselves primarily, our thought processes, dealing with the past and removing the past from carrying any emotional weight forwards, removing any attachments and addictions which are not helpful, addressing desires that are interfering with conduct, thought, behaviour, emotions. We also should address deprogramming, removing from our mind-set any thoughts that are restrictive of our individuality and true nature, and untruths we have been carrying. Above all, we should remember that non-human, non-physical, entities are always close by when we exhibit emotion of any sort. They attach to us and this affects our conduct and thought processes, taking us away from the blueprint we had at birth.

Today, most people are so scared of death (from not addressing death preparation adequately) that they are prepared to do almost anything, including bankrupting their families, taking whatever medications the doctors thrust down their throats, to live just one more day.

Better to address our fear of death while living, however painful this may be, as it is preferable to the ‘demons’ we meet on death:

Even though these demons are only performing an invaluable role in cleansing our soul/essence, prior to its next circling back into life, unless we have developed sufficiently to pass by the guardians of the ‘spheres’ along the way.
